The TaskYour task is to right an essay based on Australia’s involvement in World War I. You will be watching a documentary based on the Gallipoli campaign where Australia played a major role in. While watching the documentary you will need to take notes about the events that have happened. Using this information, you will produce an essay answering the following question:

Impact on Society - deaths and those left at home

More than 8,000 ANZAC's died in the Gallipoli Peninsula, despite the soldiers only being there for 8 months. As Australia was still a relatively small nation with a small population. This meant it was likely that a lot of people knew someone who had died in Gallipoli or knew someone who had been involved in the great war.

CONscription |
The community opposed conscription despite a push from the government of the time. They attempted to hold a referendum in 1916 and 1917 to institute conscription. All soldiers who fought in World War I were volunteers. This led to an increase in political advertising to encourage men to go to war.

First Action Since federation |
Federation occurred in 1901, meaning that by 1915, Australia was merely 14 years old. Australia hadn't made its mark on the world yet and was very 'non-existent' to the rest of the world. The ANZAC's changed this and marked a milestone in our history, in regards to our personal culture and out impact on the world.

Parades and Dawn Services |
The Dawn Service observed on Anzac Day has its origins in a military routine that is still followed by the Australian Army today. The Dawn Service is not an Army specific ceremony. It is a public ceremony normally conducted by the Returned and Services League of Australia with involvement across all three Services of the Australian Defence Force. The origins of the Dawn Service are not entirely clear and research is currently being undertaking by Australian military historians to ascertain the true beginnings of the Dawn Service.

ANZAC BIscuits |
The army biscuit, also known as an ANZAC wafer or ANZAC tile, is essentially a long shelf-life, hard tack biscuit, eaten as a substitute for bread. Unlike bread, though, the biscuits are very, very hard. Some soldiers preferred to grind them up and eat as porridge.

Gallipoli CENTENARY |
Australia has recently celebrated the ANZAC centenary. This event has commemorated the efforts of all ANZAC troops from the last 100 years. The ANZAC spirit and name was born out of the courage of the soldiers who fought in Gallipoli, and has lived on for 100 years..

TV Series and movies |
Gallipoli is a 1981 Australian film directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson and Mark Lee, about several young men from rural Western Australia who enlist in the Australian Army during the First World War. They are sent to the peninsula of Gallipoli in the Ottoman Empire (in modern-day Turkey), where they take part in the Gallipoli Campaign.

Great adventure |
In the early 20th century, it was difficult for Australians to go visit overseas. For the young men and women who signed up for the army to go to Gallipoli, they were promised adventure. Australians have now become some of the most traveled people in the world always seeking adventure.

The ANZAC Day clash is an annual Australian rules football match between Australian Football League teams Collingwood and Essendon, held on ANZAC Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Helping our Mother country |
Since Australia is a part of the commonwealth and answer to the monarchy of Great Britain, Australia is forced as a nation to aid in the war efforts of its 'mother country'.

National Heroes |
There are many national heroes such as John Simpson Kirkpatrick was born in Britain but later moved to Australia. In August 1914 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving at Gallipoli the following year as Private John Simpson in the 3rd Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. He served from the time of the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April until he was killed in action on 19 May. Simpson became famous for his work as a stretcher-bearer. Using one of the donkeys brought in for carrying water, he transported wounded men day and night from the fighting in Monash Valley to the beach on ANZAC Cove.
